No one moves like Michael Jackson
When people usually associate me with something or someone, they automatically think ‘Michael Jackson’. I guess the reason that happens is because I make it very clear that he is my favourite musical artist, I often reference his songs and imitate his dance moves on a regular basis that even if I have met someone for the first time and they don’t know much about me…by the end of the day they will realise I love Michael Jackson.
So it was no shock to me when about 5-10 of my friends sent me messages on Facebook and sent texts to my phone saying that the King of Pop had been pronounced dead. The first bit of information I got regarding Jackson was when I was on Facebook and one of my friends had written that he had been taken to hospital because of a supposed heart attack – this was written on his Facebook at around 10:45pm (GMT) and I just took it as a rumour and thought nothing of it. Little did I know that it was more serious than I first thought, and by the time it had got to 11:20pm I had texts, Facebook messages and phonecalls from people saying he is rumoured to be dead. So I tuned into the news and there it was…images of the hospital where Jackson was supposedly dead. At the time, the news stations said that Jackson had been taken into hospital but didn’t say that he was dead. Then all of a sudden, the information changed and in a big red box with white letters said ‘JACKSON DEAD’ and the news reporter then said in a very surprised and sad voice, “If you are just joining us ladies and gentleman, I regret to announce that the pop star Michael Jackson has died of cardiac arrest”. At that point, my heart just sank and I started to shake…how could this be possible? This was Michael Jackson…he isn’t supposed to die! This man…my hero…my role model…let’s just say that I found it hard to believe. I just sat there listening to the news reporter going over and over again that Michael Jackson had died – my nan was also sitting with me just as shocked as I was. As we continued to watch, more and more text messages were appearing on my phone…my phone was constantly vibrating with messages from people saying ‘watch the news, MJ is dead’ and ‘is it true that MJ is dead?’ and etc. I answered all of them with the truth, some even asked me how I felt and again, I said the truth. I was speechless and shaky…but no tears had been shed.
I continued to watch the news broadcast until 4am which by then, PR had announced to the Los Angeles community that Jackson had died and Jermaine Jackson had also made a statement for the media broadcasters confirming the sad and tragic news. They also showed images of Jackson’s body being transported, by helicopter, to a van where the vehicle will transport his body to the autopsy clinic where they will begin tests to find out what killed him. The tests are still going on at the moment and, according to many news sources, the results won’t become clear for at least 6-8 weeks. Many suspect his prescription drugs killed him, others say it was stress, a few suggest it was his doctor that killed him…whatever the reason is, I am sure it will be revealed when the autopsy is done.
Once news had spread around the world about his death. The radio and music television channels immediately postponed regular programming and played all of Jackson’s music back to back for hours…some even for days. They were providing tribute to the man that brought smiles and memories to millions which was happy to see. Most of my Facebook friends had changed their status’s to paying respect to Michael although some weren’t as nice as others. My friend, Daniel Jefferey, made a very good point. He stated that he finds it ironic how the people who praised Jade Goody and called her a national hero are sick and tired of hearing about Michael Jackson and don’t care. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but if people think Jade Goody done more for charity or for people in general than Michael Jackson then they are even more naive and stupid than me. According to various online information sites, Jackson supported well over 35 charities and even had his charity foundation entitled ‘Heal the World’. He was even rewarded for his contributions by being allowed to visit the White House and be presented an award by then President Ronald Reagan. What did Jade Goody do again exactly…ah yes throw racial remarks…classy.
Michael Jackson had many of his singles featured in the UK Top 40 and now holds the #1 album in the country with ‘Number Ones’. It’s nice to see that people are paying tribute by buying his music rather than illegally downloading it! Most, if not all, of the UK television broadcasters (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky1) provided an hour long documentary celebrating Jackson’s music and controversial personal life right up to the announcement of his death. I thought it was just enough information to make people realise who the guy is, and I now eagerly await a Michael Jackson biopic film to be released soon…or within the next few years!
I talk about how Michael Jackson has affected the general public and the media outlets but haven’t really dived into how it has affected me personally. As mentioned, I was speechless and shocked about his death but I haven’t shed any tears yet…I generally find it hard to cry unless it’s the funeral…I guess I am a cold blooded stone! Michael Jackson has been in my life ever since I was about 5 years old, I remember watching ‘Moonwalker’ and was totally mesmerised by the ‘Smooth Criminal’ segment – I just wanted to know how he did that anti-gravity lean! From then on, when I was about 8-9 I stumbled across my Dad’s ‘Off The Wall’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’ albums. I admit that I didn’t really like the ‘Off The Wall’ album when I was younger and so I found myself going back and forth with the other two albums! Out of the two I would say ‘Bad’ was my favourite at the time. Everyday, after school, I would come home and stick the CDs in the stereo and read the words (as they were in the album booklet) and mime to his lyrics while really listening to the music. I often imitated the instruments that were played in his music, the one that captured my interest was the music used in ‘Another Part Of Me’…I thought that song was absolutely fantastic when I was a kid! While his singing and music had captured my heart…it was his dancing that really caught my eye…
My Michael Jackson obsession had become obvious to my parents and my Grandparents and so they bought me his Greatest Hits album as well as the video which contained all the videos! From then on, I was hooked! Me and my friends (Spencer Campbell, Ian Andrews and Kenan Tezgel) often came to my house and we would practice doing the dance moves. It’s pretty strange how a bunch of 7-8 year old kids are listening and trying to be like a guy who had reached his prime about 10 years ago and yet still think he was better than anything being played on the radio back in that time! I often practiced alone when my friends weren’t round…and I remember seeing the moonwalk and decided to practice. It took me a long time before I perfected it…hell…I am still trying to perfect it now!
Even though I loved Michael Jackson and some of my friends did too, it would not come without criticism from the other classmates who dissed him in front of us and often slammed us if we tried to say a good word about him. The teachers never really got involved and I often wondered why – it wasn’t until years later that I knew why…the child molestation incidents! Soon, it was just me and Ian that were the die-hard fans of Michael Jackson and then eventually it looks like it was just me being the sole survivor once me and Ian got to high school. I admit, once in high school, I became a closet Michael Jackson fan rather than an outgoing one…I couldn’t face being bullied in school for liking him. I realised this when in literacy with Mr. Taylor he asked us to list our Top 10 songs and I put ‘Smooth Criminal’ at #10…boy did I get laughed at. From then on, I just kept the fanboy in the dark and that was where I started listening to rap music…a music genre that I still listen to and am so passionate about!
I still listened to Michael Jackson and everyone knew I could dance like him, but it just wasn’t seen as cool or the right thing to do/be. I remember the ‘Living with Michael Jackson’ documentary that was shown in early February 2003 and the next day it became the subject that everyone had been talking about. I think it was from that documentary that I found out about his mannerisms and his naivity. Everyone was making jokes about him and I joined in, I was just following the crowd and hoping not to get beat up or be called names! It wasn’t until 2006 where my love for Jackson reached the heights again just as it did back when I was 7-8…this time I was exploring songs of Jackson’s that I had never heard before. Songs such as ‘Can’t Let Her Get Away’ and ‘Who Is It’ I had never heard of when I was a kid had suddenly grown on me and I found myself liking them more than the more well known singles! It was a good year!
Once university started I was more confident on being open about me liking Michael Jackson and it was accepted! For the next 3 years, everyone realised that any bit of Michael Jackson news they heard or anything else related they would call me, text me and tell me. I often always heard about it before they did but it’s nice to know they cared! My friends would criticise him in front of me, but by this point I had become neutral…I laughed at the Michael Jackson parodies that MadTV would do and, at the same time, support the court case of 2005 in which he was acquitted of child molestation charges again. People would come up to me hoping to get a fight out of me, but they would be left disappointed when I would be neutral with them! Fact is, Michael has problems but he never lets them show in his music…which is what he should be remembered for!
So here I am, still a massive fan and always will be. I have posters hung up, I am even listening to his music now as I type this! As for my opinion on what killed him…I will answer that when the autopsy results come back!
