I'm 43 years old, and returning to school fullt-time January 5th.  I am changing fields, everything.  I'm studying nursing, after years of being in management, writing, etc.

What should I expect, besides stares of the young kids?

Apart from the stares and probable name-calling/insults etc which may make it seem like a rough ride I wouldn't really expect anything out of the ordinary. However, that said - schooling especially in the UK has changed drastically in the last 20 years or so, in my opinion for the worse in terms of student discipline, teaching methods and the standards of these..

So I'd certainly brace yourself for a bit of a shock..! Alternatively, you could just mess about like a dickhead teen as it's unlikely anyone (staff) will do anything about it. I regret not doing that to be honest!

I went back at age 37, and I did get some stares, but not as many as you would think.  The university I was attending was really pushing adult education programs, so at the time there were roughly 500 of us non-traditional students mixed into the student body.  Obviously, the kids had trouble relating to me, owing to the age difference, but when it came to discussions about class or assignments, we were all pretty much on the same level, so we could relate that way.

You may find that going back now will be very different from the first time around - it certainly was for me, not just from the perspective of being older that most of my college peers, but also my attitude was very different.  Let us know how it goes for you.

I'm in college now, and I've had one or more "nontraditional" (older) students in all my classes.  I actually appreciate having them around, since they usually provide great input.  We all get along pretty well too, no big issues.
